摘要： 孔子是19 世纪后半期美国人所知晓的为数不多的中国人名字之一。时值排华浪潮兴起, 针对中国的文化偏见泛滥, 孔子必然承受着日渐猛烈的嘲讽攻击。美国报刊杂志讽刺孔子之举是美国人排华情绪的反映和延伸, 同时也为美国完全禁止华人移民法案的通过发挥了推波助澜的作用, 为排华运动走向极端营造了必要而适宜的舆论氛围。美国社会的排华行为从媒体的讽刺中找到了理论依据。
